Zodiac Pendant
by Sam Katz
Supplies Needed:
•Amate Studios Designer Collection Jumbo Square Pendant in any finish.
•About 1/4 block of black (or any dark color) polymer clay. I used Premo clay for this project.
•Either a clay dedicated pasta machine or acrylic roller
•A rubber stamp or anything you can use to imprint a zodiac symbol into the clay.
•A straight tissue or clay blade
•1 birthstone bead (optional)
•1” 28 gauge craft wire
•Amaco Rub & Buff
•Any clear coat for use with polymer clay or Future floor wax (optional)
•Glue (any cyano-acrylate will do)
•1 small smooth ceramic tiles.(these are actually smooth white bathroom or kitchen tiles & can be found inexpensively at places like Home Depot).
Instructions:
1. Condition your clay. If you are not familiar with conditioning polymer clay, you can go to:
http://www.artjewelrymag.com/art/Default.aspx?c=a&id=755
for a short video.(You will need to create a free account, but it is fast & easy)
2. Run your conditioned clay through your pasta machine on a setting that will give you a sheet approximately 1/8” thick or roll with your acrylic roller to a uniform 1/8” thickness. Placing a stack of playing cards with an equal number of cards on either side of your clay will help you make a uniformly thin sheet (in this case about 2-3 cards). You will only need about a 2” x 2” sheet.
3. Place your pendant face down on your clay & press gently to make an impression of the space you want to fill.
4. Press your stamp strongly into the clay. (double check against your pendant to see if your clay has shifted. If so, re-mark the size of your pendant. Trim with your clay blade to the exact size of the pendant.
5. Place trimmed clay into the pendant & smooth clay edges to the sides of the pendant.
6. At this point you can texture the remaining clay or make tiny balls of clay & stick on to add an interesting texture & depth.
7. Put your birthstone on a small piece of craft wire. Cross the wire “behind” the stone & twist the 2 ends tightly.Trim the twisted wire about an 1/8” from the bead & stick the twisted end into the clay on a slight angle.Again, you can use little balls of clay to hide where the wire comes out of the bead & goes into the background clay.
(all of this step is optional)
8. Put a small amount of rub & buff on your finger. Gently rub a thin layer over the impression of your clay. (you will either be accenting the symbol or the negative space around the picture, depending on your stamp).
9. Place your pendant on a ceramic tile & bake, at the temperature recommended by the manufacturer of the clay brand that you are using, for 20-30 minutes. Let cool.
At this point, you can either:
10a. For a matte finish: use a soft cloth to gently buff of any excess rub & buff. Rub until no more color comes off. Try not to smear it on your black clay, but if you do-use a Q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol to clean it of unwanted areas.
10b. For a glossy finish: use a Q-tip to apply a thin layer Future floor wax (or brush on any other clear coat made for polymer clay). Let dry completely.
11. If you can pop your clay out of the pendant (easiest if you’ve embedded a birthstone to pull on), do so & then glue it back in using any cyanoacrylate glue.
