Chinese New Year
Designed by Sam Katz
Supplies Needed:
•Amate Studios Designer Collection Pendant Blank #SO60600169 in silver
•A small sheet of origami paper-bright contrasting colors work best.
•Either a clay dedicated pasta machine or acrylic roller
•About a 16th of a block each of ecru & white Premo! polymer clay.
•Premo! Fashion Art Mini Metal cutters (we will use the circle cutter)
•3small imitation oriental coins
•A tissue or clay blade (or an X-Acto knife will do)
•Any cyanoacrylate glue
•A black permanent ink stamp pad & small letter stamps (I used metal stamps)
•Lisa Pavelka’s Magic Glos (either sunshine or a UV nail lamp available from Amate Studios)
•1 small smooth ceramic tile to use as a work surface
(these are actually smooth white bathroom or kitchen tiles & can be found inexpensively at places like Home Depot).
Instructions:
1. Condition your clay.(If you are not familiar with conditioning polymer clay, you can go to:
http://www.artjewelrymag.com/art/Default.aspx?c=a&id=755 for a short video. (You will need to create a free account, but it is fast & easy)
2. Using your pasta machine or Acrylic roller, roll out a flat piece of ecru clay, about 1mm thick.
With your Premo! mini circle cutter, cut out a circle, fold it gently & loosely in half & then bend it into a “fortune cookie” shape. (Don’t close it tightly yet, you will need to insert your “fortune paper” strip of clay first.
3. Next, roll out a flat piece of white clay, about .5mm thick & using your tissue blade or X-Acto
knife, cut a strip approximately 4mm x 4cm for your “fortune paper”.
4. Ink each letter stamp prior to stamping & stamp out “Happy New Year” one letter at a time (I recommend practicing on a piece of scrap clay first)
5. Gently insert the “paper” into the “fortune cookie”
6. Place bracelet on a ceramic tile, piece of cardboard or a cookie sheet & bake, at the temperature recommended by the manufacturer, for 20-30 minutes. Let cool.
7. While you are cooking the fortune cookie, trim your origami paper to fit inside the pendant blank & glue in place with your cyanoacrylate glue.
8. Find a pleasing placement for your coins (I cut an edge off 1 with a heavy duty cutter, so it could go right up to the edge of the pendant. This isn’t necessary, but fun) & glue them in place. When your clay cookie is cooked & cooled, also glue it in place.
9. Fill the pendant with Magic Glos (air bubbles encouraged for this project-it gives it an "art glass" look) & follow the curing directions using either a UV light or sunlight.(be sure your pendant sits flat while curing, by either hanging the bail over the edge of the lamp bed or sitting it on a stack of paying cards or something similar)
