Summer’s Eve Pendant by Sam Katz

Supplies Needed:

•Amate Studios Designer Collection Jumbo Long Rectangle Pendant in silver overlay.

•About 1/4-1/2 block of black polymer clay, 1/4 block of blue polymer clay & a small amount of silver polymer clay.

Any brand will do for this project. I chose Cernit for this project.

•Either a clay dedicated pasta machine or acrylic roller

•A straight tissue or clay blade

•3 small (about 2mm) glass or crystal rhinestones (clear).

•2 paper punches - 1 palm tree (approximately 3/4”) & 1 crescent moon (approximately 3/4”)

•Magic-Glos (1 part UV resin)

•Heat gun

•Glue (either white glue or cyano-acrylate will do)

•2 or 4 6” x 6” or 6” x9” smooth ceramic tiles.

(these are actually smooth white bathroom or kitchen tiles & can be found inexpensively at places like Home Depot).

Instructions:

  1. Condition each of your colors separately. If you are not familiar with conditioning polymer clay, you can click here for a short video.(You will need to create a free account, but it is fast & easy)
  2. a. Create a small Skinner Blend from black to blue (using conditioned clay). If you are not familiar with making a skinner blend, you can click here: for a short video (If you didn’t already do so, will need to create a free account, but it is fast & easy) You will be making a smaller version of the Skinner Blend than shown in the video. You will want a blend about 3 inches tall & the width of your pendant, madeon the thinnest setting of your pasta machine that you can get a smooth sheet (1mm or slightly thinner is good).Make 3 or 4 blends in case you have trouble with the next step.(You could alternately make your blend from yellow to red, to silhouette against a sunset, instead of the night sky)                                                                                                  b. Alternatively, without a pasta machine, use the same method shown in the video;Using your acrylic roller to repeatedly flatten your folded clay. On your last roll, placing a stack of playing cards with an equal number of cards on either side of your clay will help you make a uniformly thin sheet (in this case about 2-3 cards).
  3. Run a small amount of conditioned black clay through your pasta machine on the same setting that you made you skinner blend (or roll with your acrylic roller) to the same thickness. You will need a sheet about 3” x 3”. Repeat with your silver clay, you will only need about a 1” x 1” sheet.
  4. Place all of your clay sheets on a smooth ceramic tile on top of a sheet of deli paper, plain paper or a 3” x 5” card no lines! the ink will transfer to your clay) & place of the same paper on top of your clay sheets & weigh them down with another smooth tile on top (smooth side down) while baking & cooling to keep your sheets flat.
  5. Bake, at the temperature recommended by the manufacturer of the clay brand that you are using, for 15-20 minutes. Let cool.
  6. Using your clay blade cut a piece out of your skinner blend that exactly fits in your pendant. Choose your spacing in the blend so that only the very top portion is black (about 1/2”), or you won’t see your palm tree silhouette.
  7. Next cut a piece out of your black sheet that exactly fits in your pendant, but only comes up about 1/2” from the bottom.Be sure that you have a straight cut parallel to the bottom of the pendant, as this will form your horizon line in the picture.
  8.  Gently slip the skinner cut out into your pendant (trim with your clay blade if necessary) & then place your smaller black piece on top of it, snugged down to the bottom of the pendant. Using the corner of your clay blade, lightly score the bottom (blended piece) across, exactly next you the top edge of your black piece. Gently remove both pieces from the pendant & using your clay blade, cut your skinner blend piece on the scored line you just made. (discard the bottom piece of the blend you just cut off). We are creating a puzzle here. At this point, just to be sure, put both pieces back into the pendant to ensure that you have a good fit. If you have any problems, replace 1 or both of your pieces using the extra sheets that you made.
  9. (Now for the fun part) Punch a palm tree out of your black sheet & a crescent moon out of your silver sheet.
  10. Turn your trimmed blend sheet over (very important or your puzzle pieces won’t fit) & punch a palm tree out, close to the right edge (this will be the left edge, when you turn it right side up) so that the bottom of the tree is exactly lined up with the bottom of your sheet (or a little below is fine, as we can always trim the bottom of the trunk off).
  11. Turn your sheet back “right side up”. You should now have an empty, “negative space” shaped like a palm tree. Play like a puzzle & gently ease your black palm tree into the hole. (some times this is easier from the top sometimes from the bottom). If your palm tree hangs down below the bottom of your blend piece, use your blade now, to trim it even with the bottom of your blend. At this point, try putting this piece back into your pendant with the black piece to be sure that everything is still fitting well. (This may take a couple of tries, which is why we made extra blends & more black than we will really need.)
  12. Next, turn your trimmed blend sheet (now with tree in it-so handle gently) back over (upside down) & punch out the crescent moon near the top left corner (when turned right side up, this will have the moon on the upper right). Turn your blend back over & gently ease your silver punched out moon into the moon shaped hole.
  13. Place a very thin flat layer of raw black clay into your pendant (as thin as you can) & place all of your pieces in on top of this, pressing down gently. This will hide any places that your pieces don’t match exactly & keep the silver of the pendant from showing through after the pendant is finished.
  14. Place your pendant on a ceramic tile & bake, at the temperature recommended by the manufacturer of the clay brand that you are using, for 15-20 minutes. Let cool.
  15. Find an arrangement for your rhinestones (they are your stars) that you like & glue them down, let glue set.
  16. This next step should be done indoors, away from direct sunlight. Directly from the bottle, slowly squeeze in a layer of of Magic-Glos up almost up to the top of your pendant. It will self-level, but you can “help” it by tipping the pendant in different directions to help it flow to the edge. If you have any air bubbles, hit them briefly with the heat gun (not TOO close, or the pressure of the airflow will blow your Glos over the edge of the pendant) & they will pop. Once the Glos is level & there are no air bubbles, prepare a place outside with one of your tiles, either flat on the ground or a table in direct sunlight.
  17. Take your pendant out in the sunlight & place it, with the loop over the edge of the ceramic tile, so that it lays flat. The Glos will begin to harden rapidly, so don’t touch it. Keep in the sun for about 10 minutes. If the sun is not directly above (noon-ish), you may want to turn the pendant & cure for another 10 minutes, if one side of the pendant was casting a shadow into the “well” of the pendant, to be sure that all edges are fully cured. (you can also use a UV light to cure the Magic-Glos indoors, so you can work at night or in bad weather)
  18. The reason I had you make your layer of Glos “almost up to the top of your pendant, is that if you now have any imperfections, you can repeat the above 2 steps

  • Clear monofilament approximately 6”

Embellishments:

  • Bare feet charms from Art Girlz

  • Small heart shaped brad

Feel free to use other embellishments such as Buttons, rhinestones, beads etc.

Tools:

  • Weldbond glue
  • Matte gel medium
  • Scissors
  • X-Acto knife
  • Wire cutters
  • Round nose pliers
  • Embroidery needle
  • Small paint brush

Instructions:

    1. Find your inspiration! Find a happy, carefree “summer” picture of a child’s face. Reduce it down if needed and photo copy it onto white textured cardstock paper.
    2. Make sure that both the mat board and the foam board are cut to fit inside their appropriate rectangles. (Mat board in large and foam board in small.)
    3. Cut your face out of the cardstock the same size as the foam board. Glue the face onto the foam board them with gel medium. Seal the face with a thin coat of gel medium. Let dry. Once dry, glue it inside the small rectangle with Weldbond. Let dry.
    4. Using the embroidery thread, embellish the fabric with stitches, french knots, criss crosses etc. Add other embellishments such as heart shaped brad, buttons, beads etc. Set aside.
    5. Glue the batting to the mat board with Weldbond. Let dry. Trim off excess batting. Wrap the embellished fabric around the batting and mat board then glue it down around the back with Weldbond. Let dry. Trim off excess fabric.  Once dry, glue it inside the large rectangle with Weldbond. Let dry.
    6. Use the 20g wire to connect the two loops of the rectangles together. Wrap it through and around the loops just enough to secure them together. Cut off excess wire.
    7. Using the seed beads, string approximately 5” onto the 26g sterling wire. Use the round nose pliers to make little coils at each end. Cut off excess wire. Wrap it once around the “neck” and position it to your liking. These are the arms of your art doll.
    8. Tie each of the feet charms to two pieces of embroidery thread, each about 6” long. Tie both pieces of thread to the 20g wire on the back of the neck. You want the feet to dangle just below the large rectangle.
    9. Glue each half of the sunflower “wings” onto the back to the large rectangle with Weldbond. Let dry.
    10. Use the leaf ribbon to cover the wire around the neck by wrapping it around several times. Glue it in place with Weldbond. Let dry.
    11. Embellish the doll with glitter glue. Make dots or swirls on the body and head. Use it to give sparkle to the leaf ribbon, wings, butterfly, and paper sunflower. Let dry. Attach these and other embellishments if desired.
    12. Tie the monofilament in a knot around the neck to create an inconspicuous hanger.

Polymer Star

By Kelley Lohr

Supplies:

Amate Studios Designer Series Star Pendant

Red, White, and Blue Polymer Clays (I used Sculpey brand) the blue has a metallic flake/glitter appearance

Stylus tools with varying ball point sizes

Oven or Toaster Oven

Instructions:

  1. Starting with the white clay, pull of bits of each color of clay and form into small balls, ranging in size from 1/16" up to 1/4" (I found it easier to make a lot of different sized balls from the start and layout on my workspace so that when I started placement into the Amate Studios Star Pendant, I would not have to keep starting and stopping to roll more little balls!)
  2. Choose a starting point in the pendant and using the larger of the clay balls, begin placing the balls into the well of the pendant, side by side, and gently using a larger ball ended stylus to gently push the clay into the pendant and forming a well in the clay ball.
  3. Randomly changing colors, keep adding the little balls around, side-by-side, and into the wells of the larger balls, until you are satisfied with placement and overall appearance.  (at this point, the clay is forgiving, so if you need to change the arrangement, use an X-acto knife to carefully pull away the unwanted clay and smooth out.
  4. Set oven/toaster oven to temperature according to directions on package of clay.  Bake as directed right in the Amate Star Pendant.
  5. Allow to cool before handling.  At this point, pendant is now hard and clay is no longer pliable.  You could also add beads and jewel stones by gluing directly onto clay.
  6. If you prefer a glossy pendant, use Diamond Glaze, Glossy Accents, or Sculpey Varnish to finish pendant.  (pendant in photo was left as bare clay, for a matte finish)
