Fall Napkin Rings
Designed by Sam Katz

Supplies Needed:

•Amate Studios Designer Collection Pendant Tray Mini Word Tag and Small Word Tag  in silver or gold.
•About 1/4 block of polymer clay. For this project, I chose Cernit “Doll/Almond” for it’s porcelain like finish.
•Either a clay dedicated pasta machine or acrylic roller
•A tissue or clay blade (or an X-Acto knife will do)
•A cheap plastic paint brush
•Acrylic paint in a brown tone (I prefer a mix of mostly burnt sienna with a little yellow ochre, used here)
•An old torn up sponge
•Any stamp or texture tool. I used Green Girl Studio’s Leaf Texture Roller.
•Beads from York Novelty Imports,
yorkbeads.com
•Any cyano-acrylate glue.
•Tiger tail & 1 crimp bead

Instructions:

  1. Condition clay.(If you are not familiar with conditioning polymer clay, you can go to:

http://www.artjewelrymag.com/art/Default.aspx?c=a&id=755 for a short video. (You will need to        create a free account, but it is fast and easy)
  2. After your clay is conditioned, roll a sheet on the thickest setting of your pasta machine or roll with your acrylic roller to a uniform 1/8” thickness
  3. Using an even pressure, roll or push texture deeply into the clay
  4. Find a nice spot in your texture & place your pendants face down on your clay & press gently
to make an impression of the space you want to fill.
  5. Using your clay blade (or X-Acto knife), trim around your piece, following the indentations made by pressing the tray into the clay as a guide. (If you are new to clay blades, be sure to hold it by the dull side!)
  6. Gently fit your raw clay piece into the pendant tray.
•It should be an exact fit so you may have to bend & cajole it a bit to get it in -be patient.
•Once you have the clay in the pendant tray, gently press with your fingers to ease out any air     bubbles that may be caught under the clay.
  7. Place on a ceramic tile, piece of cardboard or a cookie sheet & bake, at the temperature recommended by the manufacturer of the clay brand that you are using, for 20-30 minutes. Let cool.
  8. Mix a small amount of acrylic paint & using a stiff brush, paint the surface of your clay, being sure to get all the way into the texturing you did. Quickly, before the paint dries, use a barely damp sponge to remove the excess paint from the surface of you piece. Repeat if necessary. You may want to have some Q-tips or cheap “duel tip cosmetic applicators” to remove paint from small areas. Be sure to clean any paint residue from the pendant tray.
  9. Place on a ceramic tile or a cookie sheet & bake, at the temperature recommended by the manufacturer of the clay brand that you are using, for 10 minutes to bond the acrylic paint to the
    polymer. Let cool.
  10. Pop clay out of pendant trays & glue back in using any cyano-acrylate glue.
  11. String your beads on the tiger tail & run it 3 times through the larger pendant & twice through the smaller one. Crimp the 2 ends.

“Thanks” Vintage Image Pendant
Designed by Michael Jack Putman

Materials:

Amate Studio’s Large Square Pendant

Ice Resin

Brush on Nail Glue (Resin Glue) (found at most beauty supplies)

Vintage image

Instructions:

*One of the key elements to sinking an image into your pendants when using resin or gels is protecting the ink and image from bleeding. You also need to create an airtight bond with the image and the pendant. So that the resin or gel cannot create air bubbles, or cause your artwork to float during the dry process. The most common glue / adhesive used for this are Modge Podge. However I find that it does not always do the job. So far my favorite adhesive that I have found is “brush on nail glue”. It is a clear resin based glue, it will adhere your image to the pendant, seal the image, and dries quite fast. It’s my favorite so far for “inkjet” images. The only drawback is the smell and fumes. Like your resin -be sure to use it in a well ventilated area. Have fun!

1.            If you have an image to place within your pendant -cut or punch your selected image.

2.            Then apply a good coat of the “brush on nail glue” to the inside base of your pendant.

3.            Apply your image to the wet glue. Then apply a strong layer of the “brush on nail glue” to the top of your image and sides. Let dry.

4.            Then prepare and pour your Ice Resin according to directions on packaging. Use heat gun to remove any air bubbles. Let dry according to directions on packaging.

5.            All done! Attach to tag or chain.

  • Old book pages
  • Lace ribbon (black and brown)

  • Fresh water pearls (green, brown, white, grey)
  • Rhinestones (topaz or amber)

  • Distress ink (walnut)

Tools:

  • Scissors
  • Tweezers
  • Strong clear drying adhesive such as Weldbond or E-6000
  • Matte gel medium
  • Small paint brush

Instructions:

    1. Using the Amate weave and book papers cut out 8 circles about ¼” larger than the circles on the bracelet.
    2. Distress the edges of the paper circles with the ink pad. Let dry.
    3. Brush a thin coat of gel medium onto both sides of the paper circles. Let dry.
    4. Form the paper circles into cups that fit inside the circles of the bracelet. Glue them in with the adhesive. Let dry. Gently fold over the edges of the paper.
    5. Glue down the “trinkets” in any fashion you desire in each of the 8 circles. Make each one different. Start with the ribbon then add the pearls, rhinestones and anything else you want.
